I think that I was so excited to find your website that I actually didn't
realize that you have my mother's name listed as Joan. Her given name was
Florence Joan Potter. There is a family story surrounding why my mother used
Joan rather than Florence. She was born in Birmingham, England on June 10,
1920 (I believe at Aston). Edna and Leslie were born in Canada and the
family came to America in 1926-27. The "Molly" shown as Austin's wife is
Mary Emily Scutchings (Molly being a nickname for Emily). But I think these
are minor discrepancies and easily explained. I just retrieved some family
papers from the bank yesterday and will try to compile some more information
for you (which really isn't much).
I don't remember the name Garnet, but I recall Gypsy somewhere along the
line being mentioned. I also remember Mother talking about Uncle Graham and
Aunt Mabel and Aunt Elsie. But that was a long time ago - I just remember
the names. And maybe you can shed some light on another family myth - that
Joseph Graham (Grahame?) Potter left England to establish himself in America
before sending for Florence Julia; but there is never any record of him
after that - like he disappeared into nowhere. I believe Austin was about 3
years old at the time. Do you know anything about that?
If we determine that we are cousins and want to continue corresponding, I
can pursue some of the information with Uncle Les. He has always been more
willing to discuss family history than Aunt Edna. And, just so that you
know, I have one brother (George), Edna has a daughter living in Washington
State, and Leslie has one daughter and twin sons-all living in California.
And, other than my brother and Edna's daughter, we all have children of our
own. So you see, you have quite an American family.
